In some operations, trucking companies may employ their own drivers but not own the trucks themselves. Instead, they work with independent truck owners who supply the equipment. These truck owners may also be owner-operators and or even a company that owns multiple trucks. In return, the truck owner receives a portion of the revenue generated by the driver.
Here's how to create a truck owner in Datatruck & assign their trucks to them.
Step 1: Create the Truck Owner
-
Go to Customer Management > Vendors.
-
Click Create.
-
Enter the vendor name.
-
From the Vendor Type dropdown, select Truck Owner.
-
The rest of the fields are optional — fill them out as needed.
-
Click Save.
Your truck owner profile is now created.
Step 2: Assign Trucks to the Truck Owner
Next, assign one or more trucks to the truck owner from the Fleet Management section.
If the truck owner owns one truck:
-
Go to Fleet Management > Trucks.
-
Click on the Unit Number to open the truck’s profile.
-
Navigate to the Ownership tab.
-
Set the Ownership Type to Company.
-
In the Owner field, select the truck owner you just created.
-
Click Save.

If the truck owner owns multiple trucks:
-
Go to Fleet Management > Trucks.
-
Use the checkboxes to select all relevant trucks.
-
Click on Bulk Action > Owner.
-
In the pop-up window, select the Owner from the list.
-
Click Save.
Step 3: Review Assigned Trucks
To confirm the assignment:
-
Go back to Customer Management > Vendors.
-
Locate and open the truck owner’s profile.
-
You will now see a list of all trucks assigned to this owner displayed in their profile in the Owner Trucks section.
Additionally, if you need to add any deductions or additional pay, you can do so by navigating to the truck owner's Accounting section and setting them up there.
