What Is a TONU Load?

TONU stands for Truck Ordered, Not Used. It refers to a situation where a truck was dispatched and the driver made it to the pickup location, but the load was cancelled by the broker or shipper after the driver was already en route or on-site.

In these cases, the carrier is typically still owed a fee — called a TONU fee — as compensation for the driver's time and the truck's positioning. Recording a TONU load in Datatruck ensures this fee is properly tracked and the driver is compensated accordingly.

When to Use TONU

Use TONU when:

  • A broker or shipper cancels a load after the driver has already been dispatched or has arrived at pickup.
  • The load will not be completed but the driver is still owed compensation.
  • You need to close out the load without recording a delivery.

Eligible Load Statuses

A TONU load can be created when the load is in one of the following statuses:

  • Booked
  • Dispatched
  • In-Transit

Note: If the load is already in Delivered status, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of the load and select Undo to revert it back to In-Transit before proceeding.

How to Create a TONU Load

Step 1: Open the Load

Go to Load Management and click on the Load ID to open the load.

Step 2: Go to the Other Pay Section

Scroll down to the Other Pay section of the load. Check the TONU checkbox.

Step 3: Enter TONU Details

Once the TONU checkbox is selected, the system will automatically update the load status and prompt you to enter:

  • The option to compensate the driver (whether full amount or by tariff)
  • The amount provided by the broker or shipper

Step 4: Save

Click Yes to apply the TONU to the load.

What Happens After a TONU Is Applied

Once TONU is recorded, the following changes are automatically applied to the load:

  • Load pay and total miles are set to zero.
  • Driver salary is recalculated using the TONU pay amount entered, ensuring the driver is compensated correctly.
  • The trip's pickup and delivery location become the same, reflecting that the load was never moved.
  • The load is marked as delivered and closed out in the system.
