What Is an LTL Load?

LTL stands for Less-Than-Truckload. It refers to freight that does not fill an entire truck. Multiple smaller shipments from different customers are combined into one truck, with each shipment having its own pickup and delivery stop. In Datatruck, LTL loads are also referred to as partial loads.

Before You Begin

LTL Workflow Visibility must be enabled in your account settings before you can create or manage LTL loads.

  1. Go to Settings.

  2. Navigate to Default Configurations > Load Management.

  3. Toggle on LTL Workflow Visibility.

  4. Click Save.

Step 1: Create the Partial Loads

Create each individual shipment that will be part of the LTL trip. Each shipment is its own load in Datatruck.

  1. Go to Load Management.

  2. Create each load using manual entry, TruckGPT, or TruckGPT Premium.

  3. At the top of the load creation screen, select the LTL tab to mark the load as a partial load.

Step 2: Create a Trip Using Trip Planner

  1. In Load Management, click Trip Planner in the upper-right corner.

  2. Create a unique trip number for this LTL run.

  3. Click Save.

Step 3: Add Loads to the Trip

Inside the Trip Planner:

  1. Assign it to the Driver/Carrier.

  2. Click Add Booked Loads or Add Trips.

  3. Select all the partial loads that will be combined into this trip.

  4. Confirm your selection.

Step 4: Auto-Sort Stops and Recalculate Miles

  1. Click Auto-Sort to automatically arrange all pickup and delivery stops in the most logical sequence.

  2. After sorting, click Recalculate to update the total miles and RPM (Rate Per Mile) across all stops.
